Colourful lively artwork of tree made using wispy pastel and paint strokes.

Backyard Nave, 2022

Acrylic and wax pastel on micro-density fibreboard

30”W x 24”H

The space between the canopy of a tree and the ground, inspired by a big, beautiful silver maple in my backyard and the nave of gothic churches like the Notre Dame Cathedral. I love the natural arching shape created by the trunk and branches of trees and wanted to express that love while also finding a way to visualize the liveliness of the air between trees and the earth. When it comes to colour, my plan was to use any colour that felt right to convey the grandness of nature while still maintaining a humble atmosphere and space.
