A school assignment with the most thought and research I’ve ever given anything in my life (which was the point). I wanted to lean into research as the art itself, at least that’s how I wanted to make myself think about it, even if everyone else just sees beads.

Spiral story got me thinking about a lot of things: my identity, my personal associations with beads, my family, my ability to sit and do the same thing over and over again. And if I want anyone to take something away from this, it’s that it is the result of me getting a lot of joy out of beads, having fun, becoming a better person, and learning about perspectives other than my own.

The catalyst for wanting to experiment with beads was an exhibition called Radical Stitch, which was loaded with epic Indigenous beading projects from across North America. Click here for more information on Radical Stitch.
